This heroic space opera blends elements of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Set in a reality not unlike our own, Fulcrum tells the tale of Letho Ferron, one of many citizens living out a mundane existence aboard a colonization/exploration vessel known as the Centennial Fulcrum.

It is life as usual for Letho Ferron until an encounter with Fulcrum law enforcement agents forces him into exile within the bowels of the ship, where he finds respite among a mysterious subservient race known as the slave bears. It is there that Letho begins to uncover the truth about the Fulcrum, the slave bears, and his own identity. When a group of terrifying marauders attack the ship, Letho is forced to decide Will he remain a misfit, rejected by his own people? Or will he take a stand and lead both races to freedom?

I was turned onto this by a friend. It isn't my normal genre of books, so I was a little skeptical (more of a swords than lasers fantasy reader). However, this book went far beyond my expectations. It is hard to describe the genre as even though it has a sci-fi setting, there is a deeply integrated traditional fantasy feel. I read it in 3 sittings (work and life get in the way). The book was easy to read, the characters were well developed and the story line was compelling. It is obviously a part one in a series, but the author did and excellent job setting the stage. Excellent read, well written, and I look forward to the rest of the series. I would suggest to a friend.

Update: The author contacted me to thank me for taking the time to read and write a review. Class act.

Fulcrum The Adventures of Letho Ferron Book 1 eBook Doug Rickaway David Gatewood Reviews

Good story although starts out a bit slow. Picks up the pace and gets better. Background is filled in nicely as you go along. Overall I found it worth reading.
I really enjoyed this book. It's an easy read and I found it difficult to put down until I was finished. The story is an original take on classic ideas. While the author clearly borrows from George Lucas and Stephen King, the reader never sits back and thinks, "well, that guy is clearly supposed to be Darth Vader!" Besides, I can think of worse sources to borrow from than Star Wars and The Dark Tower. George Lucas borrowed from Kurosawa. That's what writers do.

The settings are all very three-dimensional and believable as far as sci-fi goes - you have to suspend disbelief a little when you read this kind of fiction. It never feels preposterous as some fantasy stories inevitably do. The characters are well-developed and interesting - you actually care about their fate. Or you really hate them. Or you mostly hate them, but you also feel pity for them.

I'm looking forward to learning more about these characters as well as what happens to them in future episodes.
I am a big fan of both Sci-Fi and Fantasy novels, and this story effectively combines the two in reading blissfulness! It's well written, and has enjoyable characters and creatures. I saw some reviews indicating that not enough was explained in the novel so it was confusing - I'm guessing those people don't realize this is BOOK 1 in a series. How crappy would Harry Potter have been if all secrets were revealed in the first novel? There would be little point in reading the others. So, yes, it does end with some very gripping questions left hanging, but that's part of the fun in waiting for book 2! I would definitely recommend this book to friends.
Enjoyed it. I could see pieces of movies pulled together making a new story with new characters. Guns swards and god? ( some kind of faith/ or magic)
Not sure whether to call this sci-fi, fantasy or thriller - it has all of those things, and the mix is fresh and interesting, with engaging characters that while not totally fleshed out yet, lay the groundwork to keep building on their lives/stories as the series builds. There's enough that you care about them and what happens to them early on, and the world the author is building is creative and absorbing. The plot is interesting and there is enough originality and twists to keep you turning pages. The only downside I found was that by the end, there are a lot of different things going on - it almost feels like too many ideas at once, but I think it's just building up to the full series, and I'll certainly read the next installment to see how it all moves forward. It's an easy, quick read - well worth your time, and a much stronger effort from a first-time author than I'm used to seeing.
I don't normally read science fiction, but I do enjoy science fiction tv/film. I found some elements of this book familiar based on a few movies I have seen, but not so similar that it lessened the unique characteristics of the story.

The first chapter was intriguing and hooked my attention. I quite enjoyed the culture and description of the slave bears, who in my mind resembled one of my favorite characters from the Star Wars episodes.

I thought the evolution of the protagonist was well done. I was less impressed with some aspects of the antagonist's traits, a particular facet of the characters that has been popularized in recent pop-culture books/movies.

That being said, I was a little disappointed by the abrupt ending, which I took to be a compliment to the author, as it left me wishing I could read on.

I look forward to the next book.
The author builds a heroic tale about Letho Ferron, your average office worker on the Centennial Fulcrum. He just isn't happy with his job and that dissatisfaction leads to a run in with the law. You can relate with our hero's unhappiness with his job and how he ultimately handles it. Subservient aliens that look like bears take Letho in and expose him to the under-life of the ship, hidden from view of the terrains.

It would spoil it for you if I mention much about the adventure; yet, I can say the plot was fun and the adventure of the fat, office worker was worth reading. There is a bit of a cliff-hanger that creates the need for a follow up novel.
